to the sea

I ride up the Road to Nowhere 3 times each week with friends from the campground. Today, we left earlier and made a detour to the beach. We went to watch turtle hatchlings being released to the sea because the ocean was calm enough for them to swim out early in the morning.

A local voluneer program that is part of a larger conservation program is supported by the Rotary Club of Los Barriles. Part of the program is to provde education about turtle conservation and to engage the community in protecting turtles.

Program volunteers collect just-laid turtle eggs, relocate the eggs until they mature and protect them from poachers and the endless off-road vehicles that may interrupt their life cycle. People are invited to help the the little guys, but they have a big drive to get to the sea once they are released. One took a bit of a turn away from the water's edge and then a tiny wave washed nearby and the turtle sped up to catch it. We heard that 78,000 hatchlings have been released this past year.
