Back to baja day 6: Nov. 5 - Rancho San Diego to Catavina

Well rested in the garden of birds of paradise, we headed southeast to Tecate on the Campo Road, bypassing the stand offering rattlesnake eggs for sale. We crossed the border at noon and cruised through wine country on the lovely newly paved Ruta del Vino, then El Sauzul and into Ensenada.

Most of the businesses in the small towns are located beside the highway and we enjoyed seeing  field labourers happy to get getting off work buses and familes having a relaxing Saturday at the beach and shopping, the smell of Mexican food and bandera music playing along our way.

The Carretera Transpeninsular is undergoing major upgrading and there were a few interesting detours along the way. At one point, we were lucky to get behind a semi as there were no construction workers and sometimes the best path through was the wrong side of the road.

Several times we saw friars with backpacks walking along the road and a carnival seemingly set up in the middle of nowhere. One last stop for fuel and then onward onto the night to Catavina for a campfire at Rancho Santa Inez and a peaceful sleep. Vida was thrilled to be at her favourite rest stop of all times.
