Life continues to be very good here. The wind has been reliable and the mountain bike riding has been excellent, largely due to a lot of hard trail repair and restoration work by M, D, & T. This work involves rock and earth-moving by hand and
Pulaski. However, some obstacles remain and sadly, M taco-ed the front tire rim on the Rumblefish 29er. Unfortunately, a bike mechanic neighbour determined the rim was beyond repair. Fortunately there are two brand new high-end bike shops,
Sportia and
Cabobike (and there is one of each) in La Paz and in Cabo San Lucas. It turns out that mountain-biking, road racing and triathlon is very big in those two cities. So, it was off to town today to see what, if anything, could be found or ordered locally to get the boy back on the bike ASAP.
It didn't seem likely that we would find the very specific part here as it was nearly impossible to find in the US or Canada. We stopped in at Cabobike in CSL and M handed the rim to the shop manager (he's the man on the far left in the grand opening photo), who immediately knew what model of bike it belonged to as this shop happens to carry the brand of bike M owns. He checked the rim carefully to see if there was a chance it could be repaired, and found it couldn't be, then thoroughly checked the extensive on-line bike parts supply catalog. Incredibly, the correct rim was located and was available for shipping from the La Paz shop to CSL in 24 hours. Wow. That called for a celebration at the Riviera Bakery and a bit of sight seeing! We like SJDC so much, we could spend a lot more time there.
